You definatly dont want to spend anymore than 40-50$ on a refractometer.
For this amount you will get a stable very accurate tool with which to monitor your salinity. They are so accurate that they consistantly will give you readings to within 1-2 % +/_. As for needing anything more accurate you can live and your critters too with a variance of one to two degrees off the mark and not lose anything.
Do check your calibration periodically. Most brands come with the solution you need to calibrate. I own a Sybon and it is the way to go over the plastic swingarms hands down
