Update:

I finally caught the damsels and returned them to the LFS. Current inhabitants are: Picasso trigger, yellow tang, 2 black percula clowns, flame angel, strawberry grouper, royal gramma, serpent star, scarlet hermit, 11 small hermits, 8 snails, 2 small frag zoos.

I decided to get a HOB skimmer. I am leaning towards the AquaC Remora with a skimmer box. Comments on this skimmer?

From everything I've heard about it, it is a great product. I have an older aquaC ev90 which works great for my 40. Plus, the customer support from that company is really good.

Can you give me an overview of the maintenance required for such a skimmer. Is it as simple as emptying the cup when full and cleaning the enitire skimmer every few months with a vinegar solution?

I don't have that skimmer, but for the most part skimmer maintenance includes checking & cleaning the collection cup 'often', and cleaning the foaming tower. Just use a damp sponge or rag to clean them. While attached to the tank don't use anything but water.

If you're planning on completely removing the unit from the tank to do a major cleaning, then I suppose vinegar would be ok. Although, I think you can avoid this altogether if you perform the collection cup and foaming tower cleaning maintenace on a regular basis.

Maybe others who have used the remora skimmer have better maintenance suggestions...

I bought the Remora Pro and the skimmer box. Bubbling and skimming away. The cup is adjustable and depending on where it is set, the consistency of the foam changes. Is dry or wet better?
