Rapid Breathing Purple Tang

I have a 125g FOWLR - 79-80F 1.025
Four VHO 140watt 10,000K and Atinics

Med sized purple tang, Small regal blue, Two percula clowns and a Skunk shrimp (cleaner).

The purple tang eats well and swims "normally". Only problem is I've noticed he breathes rather fast and wondered if this is the beginning of "ich" or problems with the high temp in the tank.

Amonia 0 Nitrites 0 Nitrates 5 PH 8.2 Temp 79-80F (lights on and off)

I think it may be chiller time as I already have quite a few fans installed with the lights etc.

What is the primary cause of the rapid breathing, is this normal?

From what you have listed all looks fine. The temp at 79-80F will not ba a problem. With out seeing the fish breath it is hard to say if it is rapid or not. If it is eating and moving around I would not worry.

Thanks Mark - I guess observing the other tangs at the store have shown slower breathing patterns, so this led me to think there may be a problem. I know the flow rate is about 1200 GPH so oxygen is not a problem. Should I try removing the glass canopy to expel some more heat? I guess I am okay, unless he starts gasping for air near the top!!

I think taking the top off is a good idea. It will do a couple of things for you. First it will allow for greater evaporation which will help keep the temp down. It will allow for better gas exchange and will allow for more light to reach your corals. The only down side I can see is if you have a fish prone to jumping it can now get out.
