There are a couple of things you can do for a power outage. Battery powered air pumps and help out. I have 2 they run several hours on a single D battery. You could get and inverter and run the main pump off of your car battery. If you have the cash you could get a generator. This way not only do you have th power to run the tank, but if you get it large enough you can also run the fridge and a TV.

As far as the main pump going down, unless you have a spare on hand there is not much you can do. Hopfully it is not your only circulation for the tank. A closed loop or powerheads will keep the tank just fine for a few days while you get the pump changed out.

Wazzel is right on with his list. I lost 17 fish the first night of hurricane Katrina. They told us the storm wasnt going to be bad. Next day I used a power converter to run one of three tank 1/2 hr each. That was only 5 days with out power. Durring hurricane Wilma Iuse a battery operated air pump for 12 days with out power. We had gas lines for miles, people fighting over stupid stuff. So I couldn't use the converter, the pump worked fine. I would go through a pair of batteries in 24 hrs.

I recently refurbed a 1500 UA UPS for about $100. It just needed new batteries and can power my main return pump for about 5 hours.

Thank you all.
I have down now a refurbed APC backup hooked up to a marine deep cycle battery,Generator and Solarpanels for battery charging.

I will buy a extra same size mag pump, heater that is in the tank and use it now for mixing the saltwater then if they go out I will have a emergency plan.
