what causes evaporation in a tank? What are the factors involved? It seems that my saltwater tank loses water faster then my fresh. is there a way of stoping it or at least slowing it down?
thanks

Surface agitation and heat from high wattage lamps are probably the biggest two factors.

You can cover a tank to retain evaporation, but must folks battle heat and they consider evaporative cooling a good thing.

Also, the humidity of your house. If you are running an Air conditoner, you will lose a lot more to evap.

High humidity= low evaporation, low humidity (running AC)= high evaporation.

In the spring/summer the humidity in my apartment is like 65%. I feel like I'm living in a reptile habitat. But I probably I lose less to evaporation than I would if my place were drier.

barimetric preasure also adds to it, you would think when a high preasure fronts comes in you would loose more, IE drier air, it is the opposite, low preasure it evaps off easier, I loose more here in Wisconsin in the spring and fall then I do in winter, dry, and in the summer with the AC on, spring and fall I loose 2 gal a day, tank is covered, but a computer fan on in hood when the MH are on for 8 hours, winter and summer same lighting time but I only loose a gallon a day, go figure!!!!!!!!!
If you want to retire early, do do this hobby!!!!!!!!! Electric bill doubled with my system!!!!!!!!!
