i just got home from my fathers house to find my purple long tentacle anemone sucked into the protective grid at the bottom of a mj1200. he is so tangled in it that i fear he will not recover. i believe it's impossible to remove the grate from his tangled tentacles. so..my question is-
do i remove him from the tank to protect the other fish from a possible toxin release?
do i sit tight and hope for the best?
do i put him out of his misery and take him for his last ride down to the swirly funeral home?

this totally blows. he is the focal point of my tank.

Tough call. I think I would flush him. If it was floating arounf the tank any way some thing might have been up. Wait for a few more to chim in before you go and do anything.

I've only been in this hobby for about a year and a half, but I say give it chance. I've seen worse to be quite honest. Try to get a quarantine tank though.

I'm sure it's trying to recover on it's own and is wondering what the hell is going on. Aren't anemones supposed to be pretty resiliant creatures?

Don't flush him. There is a big chance that he will recover. Keep him in the tank and hope that he will recover completely. If he is healthy, there is a very good chance that he will be fine. Good luck.

wow...this AM, it's like nothing ever happened! he completely removed himself from the grate and is doing perfect!
i have turned all my powerheads upside down so this can never happen again.

I told you they deal with stuff all the time in nature right?And they survive. I read a thread on here once and I really didn't believe it but i still remember it and maybe it was true. The post here said that he came home from work and noticed his anenome was missing and couldn't figure out what happened or where it went. He looked under his tank and it was in the fuge. but supposedly it went passed the filter grates to get there. amazing.
glad to hear it all is well with your prized possesion. bet the clown is happier than you are!!!!!

Mr X, glad to see things are looking better today. If you can, remove that anenome to a Qt tank for a few days. My limited experience with damaged anenomes is that if they start to die, they are capable of nuking your tank really badly. Mine died after being harrassed by my (ex) emperor (yeah, i know! I was very new at that stage) and in the process he vaporised some 'shrooms nearby (almost like acid had been poured on them) and killed about 4 fish immediately. Besides which, whatever he released into the water stressed my surviving fish really badly and some died a day or two later. My ananome was a different species (purple tip) although, and some of the more knowledgeable folk here may have more species specific advice. IMHO, better safe than sorry!

Good to hear! Excellent idea regarding turning your powerheads upside down. I may do that too if I get an RTBA.

I had an anemone just like yours Mr. X and he totally got stuck in my powerhead and died. The pictures of yours didn't look dead. You are lucky though.

thanks. yes, those pics do look good, but i think that was sort of the recovery stage. BELIEVE ME it looked horrible when i first saw him!

no offense, but i'm going to pass on the advice on removing him from the tank. i believe he doesn't need any more stress, and i also believe he needs halide lighting. he probably expended alot of energy getting his butt out of that predicament, and needs to rejuvinate. he ate a small piece of shrimp tonight too. i think he's going to be fine. thanks for all the replies.

for the reasons above i generally dont keep BTA's. but.... i like them too. i have lost a few large ones. one nuked my 20g cube.... killed all my sps with mucas. i am glas he is fine. i imagined its foot in the prescreen for the pump.... that would be "no bueno"

yeap...he's ship-shape. what's weird about this guy is....no one is afraid of him, and he hurts no one as far as i can tell(except a brief run-in with some shrooms) my tigertail cucumber is parked beside his foot right now, and the cleaner shrimp seem to enjoy being near him. also the porcelain crabs seem to hang out with him too.
