i had some trouble with a real nasty looking sand bed. it had brown algae all over it and was just generally ugly. someone suggested i buy some sand sifter stars. i bought 2. now the sand is beautiful, and i believe they are out of food. what can i add to the tank bottom for them to munch on?
copapods? where do i get a bottle of yummy copacola?

Many here will tell you that SSS will deplete your sandbed of life and then die of starvation. I have also read that it is not necessarily the case and it depends on the size and maturity of your tank/sandbed (Also, copecods are much faster than SSSs). In your case, with the 1" of sand you've got, the "earliness" of your tank, and you being new to reefs, I would be weary. Just my opinion, though.
