When did you purchase your rock? The purple is coralline algae. It takes time to grow.

i just want purple rocks, any idea why things aren't happening?

The new rock is nuking the cycled rock (9 mo old). The amonia will kill everything. As the new rock cycles, it will eventually get to purple. It really takes months for this process to take place.

I'm not sure why your MI rock turned black. It's not algae? Can you blow it off w/ a PH.

How old is your system?

hey, some more info abou the rock i just bought 2 weeks ago.
I bought about 40 to 60 pounds @ 2.99 a pound.
The rock was in an established tank at a fish store for over 5 years. they were breaking down the tank and the tank was in bad shape with algea and all, but the rock was cured. I cleaned off the algea for the most part and just put it in and have been checking levels regularly and nothing has moved.

but this has been going on before i put that rock in and I have never added more than 2 rocks at a time since my first purchase. 2 rocks in a 125 is no big deal. my ammonia level is usually at zero or alteast almost always. and i have never been able to get things purple.
I have heard of purple up but i don't know enough about it.
anybody use it? like/dislike?
anyhow my tank is established , perameters are good, have good calcium levels, and no purple!

ahhh grasshopper, I seek the knowledge, i need to fulfill my destiny.
anyhow
the MI rock is black no power head is going to take it off it changed color, i actually like that one better black, but for the rest of it. 9 months later no purple just kinda curious as to why i thought things would be well on there way by now and it just isn't. 9 months is a long time i think it should be good, I see purple up in my future!

Actually I bought the rock purple, as the months went by I have purple powerheads spots (I do not understand that one). Ha! I cheated. But any rate, If I am not mistaken it takes more than a year for that species of coraline to grow. As far as the black goes, I have a friend that owns a aquatics store and I will ask him. Because some of his tanks have that crap all over them too.

Talk to ya later!

Have you tried buying some rock with the purple coraline on it? Also my base rocks are from figi. Where they come from might have a lot to do with it.

on a quest for purple!!!!

dougy, you are surpassing me at a rapid pace. I should have never shown you this site, you are a posting bad ass

hey i don't notice any pattern with light and coraline for some reason, i do have some rocks that kept there purple but the majority of it isn't, I have some other rocks that have a cool green color to them and some pinks but i was looking for the straight up purple.

If i see purple up around i will try it, I can not find a store that has is for some reason. Pets plus on the blvd in philly, never heard of it.
yeah expirienced staff...

Whats your water parameters?
Alk
CA
PH
PO4
Mag

And lighting?

These play a huge role for coraline.

Some coraline does not like very intense light.
