Hey,

I’m new to this forum looking at starting a 30 gallon reef tank. I'm looking for a good protein skimmer that is quite / close to silent while in operation. I need one that’s hang on.

LOL.. I beleive the Aqua C remora and the Tunze skimmers are pretty highly rated for efficiency and low noise.

I'm in the market for a skimmer for a 30gal as well, but I don't want a hang on and don't want to spend more than $200-$250. Any ideas?

I have a hang-on-back Aqua C Remora and it works great (bought used in great condition). It's nice to know that thing is getting disgusting stuff out of my 40 gal. Good luck!

I must be one of the lucky ones, I bought the Seaclone 100 before I found out about its bad reputation on line. I decided that I would give it a try. I have the "Cant pass up a challenge" gene. I installed it on my new 30 gallon tank Sunday night and just tweaked it a little every night until last night (Wednesday). After letting it sit for an hour after making the final adjustment I now have a nice column of steady foam. This morning there was about an 1/8 inch of gunk in the collection cup and the foam column was still present. No micro bubble in the tank and it is puring along nicely. I have never used one before and I really don't understand all the fuss. Maybe other skimmers are set right out of the box, but this was what I had on had at the time. As long as it keeps working I am happy with it. My only ***** is the weak suction cups that came with it. They don't hold very well and I will need to find replacements.

Will this continue? I don't know, but I will take it for now.

Its not absolutely quiet, I hear the burbling, but I don't know any way to make it stop without causing it to not function. If you want quiet you may have to sump it and insulate the area around the sump for noise.

Two things -
1., the noise, take a long air hose and scotch tape it to the hose they give you (for a good seal). It will act as a nice muffler.

2., make sure that that little gasket that keeps the thing together stays tight, and check it often.

I went on vaca, had a friend change out the skimmer cup, and the gasket failed. I came home to a very scary situation where my stand (made out of particle/flake board) was about to collapse on itself. I had to take down my entire tank, get a new pine stand, and rebuild it. --just not a nice way to come home from a relaxing vacation. 8O
