I was thinking of picking up a Mandarin Goby but wasnt sure how long i should wait for the pod population to become adequate...

i see them everywhere from the sand, live rock, and in the fuge but im afraid if i purchase one he may do good for a month of so then slowly starve...

i've had my tank set up for about 4 months now, its 150 G w/ 240 lbs of live rock and a fuge...

Any info is appreciated...thank you in advance..

i don't know for sure, but i bought one early on and had him for a month. he looked fat as heck, but one day i never saw him again. i think a sally lightfoot got him. mine was the little green spotted variety(Synchiropus picturatus).
i have a large purple one now (Synchiropus splendidus) who is completely fat and happy.
my guess would be, that 240 pounds of live rock has enough, and will continue to generate more than enough food to sustain a single mandarin.

What ive heard to do is take like a small little basket with some holes in it and put it over a piece of live rock with pods in it. You should make it so that water current can flow to the rock and pods can get to it but the mandarin cant eat anything off the rock so then hopefully theyll have a safe place (at least from the mandarin). I have not tried this but it sounds good if you can find the right basket.

I think with 240 pounds of live rock that you will be OK. I would wait another 4 months before adding him tho, your tank is still very new.
