Aquarium and a....kitty

One of the more dis-comforting thought is this.

I now have my aquarium, and I have had a kitty (near cat age).

What have you done to prevent the little grunt from jumping into the tank (and i imagine he will)

you could always have a hood on the tank. that would keep him out, though i dont think the cat would jump in, its very probable hed paw at it but i doubt hed actually go inside the tank while it has water in it...

yea i got a cat myself. She never jumped in, but i'm sure she put her paw in there. I never had anything bad happen.... I know she's been on the tank because I see paw prints. She never goes on the tank now.

Most cats calculate before jumping on unfamiliar territory. Some cats aren't like that, and if yours is I would take precaution.

yeah im worried about him putting his paws in at all.
Maybe I am paranoid about all of this but, if he puts his paws in that means he was some how balancing on the rim of the tank.
If he was balancing on the rim of the tank then thats added pressure to the tanks supports.

Do tanks in general (like a house) have support for pressure that in theory would never exist in the tank (after water/rocks/sand/et al. is considered)?

Or are tanks created to support (say a 45gal. tank) 45 gallons plus a few extra pounds for rock and sand and what not and thats it.?

im picking him up now (he is still a kitty) and he is about oh id say...10 pounds.

Yeah i know thats light but. What if he was balancing on the front rim of my bow front tank? that isnt alarming to pressure on the glass?

oh and in regards to the tank. As long as you got a new or fairly new tank I wouldn't worry. I know there's a life span for tanks.... not sure how long though.

Also, soon the tank walls will begin to bow. I freaked out the first time I saw this. It occurs for both glass and acrylic.

the tank is used though in terms of age i would estimate it is under the fairly used section.

I don't know how thick your rim is. Mine is like 4 inches all around? So I don't worry, but I think yours is rather narrow. A canopy would probably be a good idea if the rim is rather narrow. Cats have a good sense of balance, but I've seen them do some stupid stuff before.

My wife's cat learned to stay away after taking a big swig of salt water. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Almost as funny as watching a newbie try to start up a syphon hose with his mouth.

we have 2 cats that couldn't care less about our tanks. i even held them up to the glass to watch the fish. as soon as i put them down, they disappear. :?

if you get a large hungry trigger the cat will learn fast to keep its paws out!!!! lol I guess you could get a glass top if you wanted to.

I have a cat that spend time near the sump every time I do a water change - She also stands in front of the tank to try grabbing the fish - I would not trust her if I did not have a canopy

I guess it depends on the cat. Mine was interested in my tank initially, but now whines every time I sit in front of it.

btw, Capslock I saw pics of your tank in the other thread. Get a canopy. I was imagining something else. If your cat goes up there now he'll try again when it's full of water.
