i am upgrading my tank from a 30 gallon to a 75 w/overflow. my overflow is a 30 gallon as well. but when i am buying my new skimmer will i need one for a 75 gallon or do i need to add the over flow to so that would make it at least a 105 gallon? any help please. i know i will need at least a 75 gallon but did not know if i need anything bigger then that.

Generally you will only need to cover the water volume that contains livestock. So if you have no livestock in your sump you will not need to count it toward the skimmer's rating.
However, most skimmer manufacturers overestimate thier skimmers capabilities IMO, so its always a good idea to get a skimmer that is rated for more than your tank's volume.

DItto what pitpat said. Get a skimmer that is rated for more than you tank. On my 150 I have a skimmer rated for 250.

Yeah Tunze is about the only company that understands this. They at least tell you drop their estimates up to 60% depending on what type of system you are running.
