Can a Kenya tree grow back from just the trunk with no polyps?

A buddy of mine decided to frag his kenya tree into 4 smaller ones and asked me if i wanted the main body with no polyps...but i was wondering how the coral would survive. Dosnt the coral utilize its polyps to catch food in the water column?

Any help is appreciated...Thanks

the problem with kenya trees is they don't utilize photosynthesis as much as most other corals, so it would be hard for it not to starve to death. but there's no hurt in trying, if it's free that is. try it out and maybe it's healthy enough to grow new polyps pretty quickly. throw it in a quarantine tank or something and see what happens.

it will live, and it will grow to haunt you. believe me, every time i see a kenya tree in my display i cut it down to a nub with scissors, and toss the piece in the sump(i feel bad killing it)...anyway...in about a week or so, here it comes, growing like nothing ever happened :(

plus, it will drop pieces of itself in the water column and it will start showing up all over the place.

i already have plenty of gsp, and oddly enough, it doesn't grow out of control like everyone elses seems to. the kenya trees, on the other hand, do.
it's best to keep them out of flow areas. when my first kenya colony grew tall it grew into the flow from one of my koralias. once it hit that flow, it's top branches came loose and floated around to other spots in the tank. now, every time i turn around, i see kenya trees sprouting up. these are more resilient than xenia.

flow has nothing to do with it, they do it regardless. my kenya is not in any flow and I have the same problem

IMO IME
