Was hoping to find a easy fix for a problem that I have on my new reef. I have a 75 gal with an overflow feeding to my sump. About every few minutes I hear a gurgle from the overflow as it quickly drains the build up water. I had a experienced friend help with the reef setup, but so far have found no solutions to this problem. Any ideas?

Sounds like your overflow is filling up, activating a full siphon, draining quickly, then starting up again. Depending on your set-up, you can add a durso or stockman style drain pipe, or simply put a ball valve on the drain pips, and restrict the outflow a little so it doesn't go through the cycle of making a full siphon, draining quickly, then doing it over again. Do you have an internal overflow box with a "u" tube?

That's exactly what is happening. Actually, after some investigation, I don't have either a durso or stockman design standpipe...apparently the source of the problem. Thanks for the advice. Is there any benefits of one design over the other? The durso design seems easier to build and I believe I have room.

Hey there E, Happy Holidays. I think the Stockman can be a little quieter, but not much. There is also a weir-type design that is a little more involved to build, and requires an external overflow box, but will be virtually silent. If you have worked with acrylic it is doable, but also requires more room. Here is the thread:
