I just purchased a Lubbock Wrasse and Royal Gramma for my tank. The wrasse is beautiful but I must admit that I am disappointed with my Gramma. I knew that it dwells in the rocks but I mean this thing is buried deep in my live rock to the point of you cannot see it and even when I feed the fish he lets the food come to him deep in the rocks. So essentially I bout this fish because of its vibrant colors which I will NEVER get to see :(

First of all, did you quarantine your fish?
Secondly, this is not uncommon behavior for many fish, especially that one.

How large is your tank?

No I did not quarantine my fish as I have no quarantine tank. I have a refugium but that wont do as obviously the water is being recycled back into the tank.

My tank is 54 gallons with about 65 lbs of liverock.

A friendly suggestion, fix that.
Otherwise you'll end up with a huge problem at some point after introducing a pathogen into your display.

Learned that the hard way years and years ago I did.

How long have you had this fish?

Mine was very reclusive in the beginning, but as time went on, he became more comfortable and he stayed out more. Now, he's out in the open most of the day.

Yep, he'll get more comfortable over time, and you'll see out in the open more and more.

Give it some time. It will become more outgoing, although they still hang near the rocks and will usually pick a spot to defend.

Perhaps if you explained calmly how disappointed in it you are. ;)

It will come out over time as it feels more comfortable with it's environment. They aren't a swimming around the tank type of fish though.

I have had a gramma for 3 years now, recently it has become more reclusive. i actually thought i didn't have one anymore and didn't see him until a few days ago for over a month. Even during feedings just didn't show. he/she used to go all around the rock work and was visible now I never ever see it.

Maybe there is some other fish stressing the heck out of him..

My gamma is the ruler in my tank... He fought with a yellow bellied damsel to claim the tank and now he is out all day...

Hopefully when I bring in the angel he remains that way.
