Lighting/Tank size question

I am looking to upgrade from my 40 gallon tank to something bigger.
My lighting system is 36 inches long, and hangs from the ceiling.
Two 250 Watt MH's and actinics, moonlights, etc.
So I'm wondering if I can get something wider than that?
Would the lighting be sufficient?
Or should I stick with a 36?

Since your lights are suspended from the ceiling you are in the best position to answer your question. Darken the room, then turn on your lights and you should be able to visualize how big a tank you can fit into the lighted area. Use the light shining on your hand to move around and determine where the intensity falls below the level you want. That should give you a fairly reasonable guesstimate.
