You do not need two pumps for a simple closed loop, the page at Melev's reef is correct. There are two types of pumps, one goes in the sump (smaller systems), the other is plumbed in line with the water return to the tank. This thread has good pictures of a large tank build:

Here is my own build thread. I am NOT good with plumbing as you will see, but you can get the idea:

Please take the time to look through these articles for pictures that may help you in design.

Specfically on refugiums...with diagrams

You are making the building of the sump too complicated. It's another smaller tank that sits under the main to provide a place to put your skimmer and other components. The sump should be as large as possible to give your tank additional water capacity. You ask how big? I tell you build as big as you can! A refugium is a place within the sump that people put macro algae into (with a light to grow it suspended above). This macro algae grows on waste the tank produces (fish feces, etc), and is a way to take out that waste. The macro grows, you harvest it and throw it away. It also provides a place for small animals (copepods, etc) to grow and reproduce. These small animals help fed the corals and fish in the tank.

If you go to http://www.google.com and search within pictures using the words "reef tank sump" many pictures will come up and this may help you. Also, there are many many videos of tanks and plumbing on http://www.youtube.com
