why not just run carbon w/ water changes while your skimmer gets broken in? what didn't you feel safe about? All the pads are is a filter sock with carbon. And the reason you would add a filter is to add some area for bacteria to grow along with filter pads to filter some sediment thats not beeing skimmed. But the pads act like an area for that bacteria to grow and ull have to change them frequently (every few days) with a big bioload in your tank. Otherwise your adding trites/trates to your tank that you don't want from the stuff on the pads breaking down. Its one of the reasons people don't run wet/dry's and don't keep dirty filter socks on their tanks for more than 3 days (besides the fact that they fill up and overflow).

People run filterless tanks with just circulation + water changes and everythings perfect. The basic filtration in a reef system is:

Live rock + live sand to act as a bio filter
circulation to provide oxygen and current through the LR/LS to aid in the bio filter.
skimmer to remove waste thats not beeing filtered by the bacteria growing in the LR/LS. or water changes weekly to remove that waste.
Carbon to remove impurities in the water that get deposited through feeding ect.

I think you wasted your money unless it was lying around or your paying alot of money per gallon of salt water. =)

if you have a sand bed and enough live rock for the system thats recommended all you need to do is water change weekly, run carbon (whihc u should be doing) and let the skimmer break in and everything should be fine unless something else is wrong with your system =0)
