When purchasing live rock from a shipment at a LFS how long is to long?

Say they got it to their store Wed. morning, and it has been sitting... how many hours in shipment packaging is too much?

Just curious here if it makes a difference as we were planning on buying our live rock in the next day or two and we know the LFS has gotten a shipment Wed. morning, tonight Wed. night it was still in its shipping packaging.... should we buy it tomorrow evening? Or do we wait for direct ship or pick it up as soon as they get it next time?

BTW--- we did fix the stand and their was no longer a gap between the stand and the tank.

regardless of buying it any time of the day... the rock would still need to be cycled. so IMO buying it time is fine, just know that the rock is going to go through a curing process no matter how large or small...

if you bought it from a fellow reefers tank thats been fully cured etc and in water, it would have very minimal if any cycle... as far as purchasing the rock from LFS, there will definitely 100% will be a cycle.

Picking it up as soon as possible and putting it water may cause less to die off (shortening the time to cycle ever so slightly), but either way you will need to cure the rock.

Considering we are starting from nothing the cure time is not an issue, we know there will be time involved... patience is a virtue ;) LOL

I know that most internet sites put the emphasis on time, that you will recieve the rock in a short period of time. And most of the curing sites I have gone to state that die off is minimal when you get the rock in a shorter time frame. I guess that was where I was going with my question and figured those that have already cured rock would know whether or not it mattered. KWIM?

As for buying from the LFS we have it worked out where we are paying much less than retail price than most for what we get. We have shopped the same LFS for the past nine years and have a good relationship with the owner. So if anything goes wrong he stands by his products. $5 a lb regardless of the choice in rock, Tonga Branches, Shelf or Fiji Premium doesn't seem so bad IMO. And we are going to pick the rock piece by piece not taking a box of "x" amt of lbs.

So $2 a lb more for convenience IMO is well worth it. Thanks you two. :)

If you ar putting it into a new tank the readings from the tank will tell you when the cycle is complete. I would say it is better to put semi cured rock into a new tank anyway so it will help jump start the cycle. The die off is what is going to start the cycle. The decaying matter is what is going to give the bacteria something to munch on and produce more and more bacteria. So my advice is to buy rock from where you want to buy it, and after you put it into yoour tank your test readings will tell you when it is safe to add fish.

if its a empty tank then dont need to worry...yea there will be some die off and a longer/shorter cycle

5$ a lb is average for alot of stores....
i have a LFS here in PA and its $2.99lb of figi and tonga, and they let you pick yourself.....thats an everyday price for any customer.

The rock is in... question.... how soon is too soon to start testing. Now I am anxious. Patience is suddenly wearing very thin... waiting is the hardest part. How the coin flips so suddenly LOL

The curing period is between 4 and 6 week`s, but depending on how long it was out of the water it could be shorter or even longer that that. You could tedt once a week and compare you level`s week to week. Good luck and remember:PATIENCE,PATIENCE,PATIENCE..........
