generally speaking, people tend to use some type of calcium based sand. In the past, you where able to get some calcium based sands that where sold in home depot as play sand.

That being said, there are people who have used all types of sand without problems, at least not problems they new about. I would also do a few searches over on reefcentral.com before I put it in my tank.

In the end, I would be concerned about quality control and contaminents. Not worth it in my book, i would rather just bite the bullett and spend the money on proven stuff.

Agreed as the wrong sand can haunt you forever and you would have to take out the sand and reestablish.
See if you can pick up "South Down" sand .. might be available on ebay.
