Hi all, What is the best way to remove detrius from your sump? I haven't done it for a while because it made such a mess last time but I think it's starting to effect my Alk/Cal levels ( so I've been told ) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Siphons work best when your sump is above your tank or if your sump is high enough to allow a drain out the door or something. Otherwise, a python connected to a sink or an eheim gravel remover is best - or the old fashioned way - use an old pump to pump it out or empty the sump once a year like I do. Even with filter socks, you're going to get it in your sump.

I do it the old fashion way. I use a tube, suck in the water to get a syphon going, and use the tube to suck detritus from the sump.

This doesn't work well because the sump is low to the ground. Sometimes I'll get salt water and fish poop all over. Da** you gravity!
