Hey mr

i have a 90gal tank with a hang on overflow box, which is 600gph 1",
i want to buy a return pump but i need to know how many gph should the pump be, and do i need any extra equipment for the pump and where should i get them. Thanks

the overflow will take what the pump puts in, so a mag drive 5 should be just fine if the overflow is rated for 600. the overflow box should have come with a u tube or a way to get the water to the back of it. other than a pump, overflow box adn some tubing all you need is some airline tubing to get the suction going on the utube, if you didnt get a pump to automatically do it.

You can approach the question this way: Your overflow can handle up to 600gph, so your pump can put up to 600gph through it...but...there'll be "head loss" on the way from the pump in your sump up to where the return goes back into your tank. So, to determine the amount of head loss in "feet" you can refer to:

...then once you have the amount of "head loss" in feet, go to the specs of pumps you'd consider (they're available at the manufacturer's websites and at vendors's websites) to see which one would give you about 575gph (to be safe) at that number of feet of head loss. The specs should give you that info so you can be pretty close to exactly what you need.
