I have several small pieces of rock in my sump for 12 months. The concern is the rock recently started to grow an algae that is approx 1/4" to 3/8" long. I do not have any lighting in the sump that would cause algae growth.

I am not sure if this is hair algae or just normal algae?

The tank itself does not have similar algae.

I am having problems uploadings pics.

Thoughts?

If the algae is only growing in the sump, I really wouldn't worry about it too much. Without light it is hard to tell what it is. I would add a mexican turbo snail( Turbo sp)and see if he eats it. Bryopsis likes light and it pretty easy to identify, it is green and looks like hair algae but with a leaf that resembles fern.
