Hi Guys
I'm not sure what's going on, but I found this brown waivey brown stuff (Kind of slippery) on my LR, it doesn't blow off the rock. Also there is something small growing on it and it's in several places, you'll notice it on the upper left of the Pics. I don't know what it is and need help with identification and fix. Additional Information, I was using IO and have begun introducing Reef crystals, Last PWC was 30 gallons 1/2 of which I used RC. Thanx

Oh Yeah almost forgot the parameters.
Water
Temp=80
PH=8.3

No such thing as zero phosphates.Could be from a cycle or the dino-flagellates which is real bad.Since I don't see the bubbles within the algae,maybe it's not it.
I'm going to check the phosphates again, according to the API card it was 0 and has been for 2 weeks now. I'll use the API test kit and the one from Seachem. Anyway if it is dino-flagellates what do you do to get rid of them. Also the tank is 3.5 months old.

Here are the test results for phosphate with the API test kit. It looks like 0ppm to me, what do you think?

Results from the Seachem test kit.

Check your Magnesium level. I had brown algae/red cyano problems when my MG was down to 900. I raised my MG level to 1300 and i'm free of brown algae/red cyano.

I ordered the magnesium test kit last night along with an Icecap 660 ballast for my T5HO's to replace the ballast I'm using now which increase their output to 85 watts per bulb from 54. I notice something interesting, this brown algae developed in parts of the tank that aren't lit as well as the center line of the tank, it's basically around the perimeter where my 420nm super actinic lamps are and not where the MH lamps are. I think I'm also going to remove the super actinics and replace them with 12000k actinic white bulbs. From what I understand I don't have to run actinics because the Phoenix 14000k lamps I'm using provide the correct spectrum and don't require any supplemental lighting. For now I'm preparing 50 gallons of water with RC for a water change tomorrow and am also keeping the lights out for a couple of days.
One good thing, the turbos and emeralds are eating this stuff.

I don't think actinics help coral they are just pleasing to our eyes.
As far as cyano or whatever you have, all tanks go through cycles. If the nitrates are really zero then you will get rid of whatever it is on its own. But if it is zero because that stuff is using it up then you have a problem.
Also the problem algae do better when bulbs are older so it may be the reason your stuff is growing better in the less light areas.
