i went to the website and there are a couple different variations. can anyone explain the benefits of using this and how it is dosed? is this essential or just an extra? any input would be greatly appreciated.

Most people use the "original" version. The low pH version is for people who have perennially high pH issues, and the concentrate is the same as the original except it is shipped without much of the water to save on shipping costs so you need to add RO/DI to the mix when you receive it.

Is it essential? Well, that depends on how you choose to supplement Alkalinity and Calcium in your system. You can, as many ( myself included) do, rely exclusively on B-ionic for this task or you can use it to supplement a Calcium reactor or Kalkwasser additions etc. Or if you use one of these other methods, you don't need it at all.

Use is very simple. You get a bottle of part 1 ( Alkalinity) and a bottle of part 2( calcium) that you add to your aquarium daily either manually or via a 2 channel dosing pump ( you can't mix the 2 together). How much of each you need depends on your system and you need to test Alk and Ca until you figure this out. That is basically it. Over time, your salinity will go up a bit so you need to watch that too. Other than that it is a very well tested and widely used system that works very well. The company is also great and they regularly support MR at swap time etc.

What kind of corals you have? When I had just zoas and acans water changes were more than enough. But after I got into SPS it started sucking up my calcium allot more where water changes couldn't keep up. I use it to maintain my parameters at a certain point.

Steve,
Its for calcium, magnesium and alk - chemicals must be supplemented.
It basically replaces your calcium reactor.
You dose daily, two part or three part to maintain three elements in constant check.
i use it. i like it. no PH issues as with calcium reactor sometimes.
