I'm almost certain I'm going to setup a nano tank. This is going to be a pretty slow process over the next few months. I think I want to go with a jbj 12dx tank, upgrading to a led retro fit from nanotuners before I put any livestock in it. Thing is I want this to pretty much be an as simple as can be setup. It may be just a softy tank. Think throwing any fish in 12 gallons of water is a bit cruel, although i might bend and throw a golby or something in at some point. Thinking about doing a bare bottom, just some rubble at the bottom and approx 40lbs lr. I don't believe I have seen a nano w/barebottom, any pro's con's to a bare bottom on such a small tank. Lately filtration. I don't believe I want a fuge (as i said as simple as could be), I believe the back of the tank has 3 compartments? Is a nano shimmer and bio balls good? No bio-balls.
This might be a tank i do a lot of experimenting on. Any advice is welcome, anyone have a similar setup?? Hope to have it setup atleast with water and rock by the end of feb. Most likely sooner, but not adding any coral or upgrading lights until the end of april.

Also plan on replacing the pump, I've heard about the rusting. Maxijet 1200 for the return with a Hydor Koralia 1 or 2 in tank.

Ditch the bioballs. Check out nano-reef.com. It's by far the best resource I've found for nano/pico tanks. I'm doing a 3 gallon JBJ picotope. There are some pretty good protocols on the forums on this site. Including a bunch of info on the JBJ 12 gallon. Good Luck.
