Try putting colored paper to appreciate whats the best color for you. Any household paint will do the job, as long as it is not inside your tank. Colored or black cardboard can be used, if you dont want it to be permanent, color may run however is it splashed with water.

Make sure everything is masked off with tape and brown paper (or plastic).
I used Krylon fusion black on a friend's tank.

Have you seen a blue backed tank in person? I didn't personally like it (to each their own)

I used Benjamin Moore Black to paint the back of an 18" cube. Just be sure to get a good solid covering with several coats if necessary. I used a flashlight to be sure of complete coverage. If light goes through add another coat. Don't be too concerned with the apperance of the painted surface since you'll be looking at it from the inside.

If spray paint is not an option you can use any latex based paint. With either application make sure you clean the glass with rubbing alcohol before painting.

I have had Blue, grey (Very dark grey) and black, black is my favorite out of the three colors.
Good luck.

Best thing's an enamel based paint or spray paint. Your standard automotive Krylon spraypaint is Just Fine. Just clean the back glass with vinegar and then grain alcohol/methylated spirits/70%+ rubbing alcohol to ensure clean, oil-free glass and good adhesion.

this is the paint I used with a foam brush and the results were amazing. I previously had used krylon fusion which is a spray, but I was unable to move the tank (200 DD) so I went this route. excellent paint with great results.
