Question about Retro T5 in hood

I have a 40G breeder, and a hood. Under the hood the width is about 36". The question is, do I get a T5 retro with a 36" width or do i go shorter? If the width of the hood is 36" exactly, would the 36" retro be too long or does the 36" include the end caps/wiring/whatever?

I can only add that there is hope..I have 48" T5 retros andi ncluding the caps they measure 46 1/2"

IF the 36" ones don't fit - you can run 2 24" bulbs on each side & offset them.

Thanks Kathy. I was thinking of staggering four of the 24" bulbs if need be.
