Sump design

What's better, have water going to the refugium before or after its skimmed??
I am designing a new sump, I see that people have water from their overflow going directly to the refugium and others have it being feed from the return pump.

pre skimmed is usually the best route but you will get a decent amount of detritus in there

I have mine skimmed first then into the refugium. No problems.

The refugium would be more efficient downstream from the skimmer.
