Hello All,

I am going to upgrade my 30 Gallon to a 60 Gallon cube and would like to know what to do about my live sand and water. I have had my 30 Gallon hooked up for over a year and my rocks are as purple as they could possibly be.

So my question is should I buy new live sand or use the sand I currently have in my tank? And should I use all new salt water or use some if not all the water from my previous tank?

I really do not want to lose any livestock and would also like to know if I need the tank to recylce again. I do have the option of keeping all the livestock in a ten gallon for a couple days but would rather complete this adventure asap.

Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I went from a 42 high to a 40 breeder and I used live sand (checked the shelf date first) and then seeded it with sand I had from my old setup. I went throught a mini spike but then I dident have alot of coral. As long as the rock is good and you transfer the water over you should be good to go, I would start buying live rock and see it so that way you know it is ready to add when you have the up grade to add more live rock to the tank

I already have about 30 pounds from my current tank fully cured and purchased another 26 pounds from another reef member that had the rock for a long time. (thanks Plateboy). The new rock is currently in my ten gallon with the water i used from a water change, been there for about two weeks. Should I worry about this new live rock?

Thanks Ant!!

that is 56 pounds of rock no way, that is alot I dont know how much rock you are going to need but I would def think that 65 pounds is enough and if it is already cured just get the sand and seed it with your own sand

so use the live sand in my current and not the new live sand? or should i mix it to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the comment Inneed. I have not done a water change on that tank but will do one tonight.

What about the water? all new water or some old? or does it even mater?

I used my old water because every ting was in check. Use the old water and add new live sand to the new tank. Then take out some of your old sand the top sand not sand from the way bottom of the tank meaning only tank out the top part of the sand

lenny tell ur manager hes a jerkoff for not replacing mark and getting my hopes up. k thanks =] see you next tuesday.

and to the OP (didnt read posts so forgive me if someone said this) use new sand for your base sand bed and top it off with sand from your existing tank. all the bacteria will be present in your tank and it will eventually reproduce to the bottom. my 2 cents.
