I am moving to a new apartment which is like 5 miles down the road. I am upgrading to a 75 gallon from a 55 gallon. I currently have super fine sand which I hate with a passion. Would it be harmful to put new sand in the new tank? It won't be live sand. I really love fiji pink reef sand. How would I go about this?

Thanks! -Jess

IIRC you are moving in May? If nearer to the end of the month, you could start cycling the new sand now in a small tank and have it ready for your move and it would not create a new cycle for you.

I'd skimmed over your other thread yesterday when you mentioned the move and there was 1 thing I didn't see - be sure to put an airpump in the bucket with the fish..even if it's only 5 miles away!

I did forget to put that in my other thread, I have an airpump ready and waiting.

As for the sand, even though it's not live sand it will still give a cycle? Could I just use a new 10 gallon plastic tote to cycle the sand? I wont be able to set up my tank until I can move my current stand.

yes you will still get a small cycle as the sand cure's others have other opinions but id use the microbelift special blend to help it along and also put a little of ur sand in with it or a rock. can do a water change a few weeks ahead and put the new sand in that water to let it stat cycle and begin getting the bacteria. and make sure you already have 20% more mixed saltwater then u need and extra ro water

Will do. i will look into that special blend. I can put a rock in there with it. I have a week to move everything out. I have my current apt till may 30 and I start moving in to my new place on May 22.

When I transfer the sand into the new tank after it has been cycling, will it mess up and levels stirring it up?

While I don't think dry sand will start any cycle (nothing organic to start one) no harm will come from cycling it, I'd only add grab a small rock or 2 along with a cup of existing sand to seed the new sand.

On the move day plan to keep the fish in buckets overnight just in case, odds are they won't but you don't want to rush things just to get them in the tank.
