i think when it come to dosing a tank there two methods, the guesstimation method, where like Wes said u test before and after till the desired levels are met, and the exact gallonage method which testing would only be for confirming what u actually put in, because u already know the exact amount of water u actually have. simple analogy; one way is like cooking to taste (using a pinch of this or that) and the other is fallowing an exact recipe (one tea spoon of sugar, and a table spoon of salt), they both make food in the end.
Lets use the word volume.

One thing I do enjoy, is after determining correct water volume, it gets easier for dosing, etc. Like, what I do, is try to stay with the same manufacturer for salt. So I test, trace elements for this and know for example, that for my salt vendor, I need to add 2.5 cups for 5 gallons of RO/DI water change.

Or for adding weekly calcium, I know how much to add weekly, same goes for Magnesium. Just gets much easier by knowing how much to dose per volume of water.

As a new example. I wanted to dip my corals in Coral Revive. The directions say what to use per 1 gallon of water. Well, that is way more than I need. Found out, that 1 teaspoon per 2 cups of water works well. So it save me money and time.

So I guess the big thing to get out of this part of this thread's discussion, is that dosing requires testing. Meaning, I don't dose, what I can not test.

Ok with all that said...I hope you did that water change and things are turning out ok? Regarding your Alk and Ca dosing, are you using the ESV brand, BRS, or some homemade stuff? 10 mls of one of the above could all have different effects...so yes, testing it a few times to adjust it for your demand would work well..... I use the BRS one and I dose 30mls for my 30 gal of water (probably around 25 gals of water due to rocks and etc...)....What I test for is alk on a weekly basis.
