so I have my skimmer with a tub going into a 5 gallon bucket

this is a dumb question but how do I maintain the siphon going from the skimmer to the bucket

I am assuming as long as I keep the end in the bucket submerged in water after starting the siphon I should be good, but I am not sure

I'm not sure I understand your question. You are using a bucket as a waste collector for your skimmer?

If so, the skimmer drain line doesn't need a siphon (it wouldn't work anyway, as skimmer production isn't steady, and the siphon would keep breaking). As the skimmate builds up it will just drain out via gravity into the collection bucket.

fwiw, that bucket will stink to all hell once it starts filling with skimmate and sits around for a few days.

And I wouldn't want to start that siphon too many times.
I'm throwing up in my mouth just thinking about it.
And an overflow box for skimmate is disgusting.

What you need is DRAINAGE. DRAINAGE.

An allusion to There Will be Blood.
