Hello
Today was a big day for me. I purchased my first piece of coral. I bought a green piece of stone coral, however while in transport, the tip broke off :0/. Is it going to die?

your 1st coral and it's sps? I would say it would die from your lack of experience, not getting proper light etc. Not from breaking..same thing as fragging..how do you think they get those small pieces? Let me ask you.. What kind of tank do you have? What kind of lighting? Are you running a skimmer? If so what kind? How long has your tank been running?

oh ok ozoneparkgay I forgot..your 1st coral was sps right? NOT!
no one starts with sps every reefer in the world says start with cheap shyt the softies the easy stuff. Leathers,Kenya trees, mushrooms etc.

Acone if it does die do not get discouraged..just do a little more research and start with the above mentioned and add 1 piece at a time. Don't rush it.

Rome was not built in a day and neither is a reef even man made ones.

Acone15,

welcome to the killing fields (any reef tank in its infancy stage). unfortunately, everyone here had one time or another contributed to the demise of their corals. except for triggerman...until recently he didn't have a tank so there were no corals to kill....hahaha. he was one of the only reefers who got no reef...:biglaugh: (trig...you know i'm just f*@&#!g with you)

do the best you can by reading up on the needs of the corals and provide their requirements to the best of your ability. this is part of learning about reefing.
have a thick skin...don't pay too much attention to people's comments and enjoy the obsession and its insanities......:sgrin:

Why do you and noel think I meant that in a mean way? I was talking to him on the phone about this earlier lol. I wasn't pullin a kanye,I was being honest I wasn't trying to discourage the kid. I'm trying to help him. My point was that if he doesn't know how a frag is made and is worrying about it dying odds are he doesn't have the proper lighting. If he does then great I am happy if not he learned a lesson. Acone SPS or Small Polyp Stony corals are the hardest to keep and require intense lighting if you do not have a strong LED fixture or metal halide lighting do not get involved with these corals until you have a good knack for the easier stuff. Lighting is not the only issue you will also need a strong skimmer and have to really keep on top of your parameters.

We are here to help so feel free to ask anything. Good luck, I look forward to your response so we can further assist you on this issue.

lets pick on triggerman today.....shall we?....lol

SPS or Small Polyp Stony corals are the hardest to keep (non-photosynthetic high nutrients requirement corals are much harder) and require intense lighting if you do not have a strong LED fixture or metal halide lighting do not get involved with these corals until you have a good knack for the easier stuff. fyi...you CAN grow sps with any strong enough lights....vho's, t5's, heck i even had them under pc's as long as they are intense enough. right now the trend happens to be led's , t5's and mh's.

Haha thank for the help guys. I can't lie, after reading triggerman's first post I was like " what a di*k" lol now I don't feel so bad. I appreciate all the help guys. The frag seems be doing good. It's only been a couple of days, however it's still opening up. I only bought a small $20.00 piece to start to see if my light it sufficient enough.
I'm running 2x t5 HO. One blue one white. I'm hoping it's enough. My water is good, however I don't have a skimmer yet.

Acone15 the sps game is hard but doable.. you can try it all just remember dont get robbed for the frags. I dont think you have enough light for sps but what do I know go for it you only live once.. I have all the stuff they are talking about( LED lighting, skimmer, high water flow) but after 2 years of up and running Im fighting with my cal,PH, Alk now trying to get them to normal ranges. But everything seems to be working agents me so my next step is to try a different salt which my help me with stabilizing my water.. Im going to go from reef crystal to the new brightwell neomarine salt next week cause its suppose to be near NSW .

Well good luck have fun and you live and you learn... I DID and still do!!

hey andy,
i just switch from reef crystal to esv. i was using reef crystal for 4-5 yrs....but got tired of getting cruds in my mixing tank. esv supposedly doesn't leave residue....we shall see. i just started the esv so no difference that can be seen yet.
btw i had no problem with the levels with the rc.....alk 10, cal 440, mag 1380, @ 1.025.
