Hey. I just got a 34 gallon Red Sea Max Aquarium and I wanted to get a head start on cleaning my water. The previous owner told me that I should clean about 3 gallons of water/month. If this is incorrect, let me know please. The previous owner also gave me bucket of sand and told me that I should use 1 cup for every 3 gallons. If this is incorrect, let me know please. So pretty much need help on what to do.

Some Questions I Have:

1. Is tap water okay to use if I put it through a Brita filter?
2. Should I use luke warm water?
3. Is there anything else I need to add, besides the salt and water?
4. What should I test for before I put the water in the tank?

Ok are you just setting the tank up and what to put water in it?

If so you have to use RO/DI water. If you use tap you will have problems later . What kind of sand is it and you can put as much sand as you what

I want to recommend googling this.

Just search for setting up salt water aquarium. Read about 4 or 5 posts and you can get a better idea of what you are about to do. Of you still have questions after that, which you should, then ask.

It is the most important time right now to get things right. Once the tank is running it is a lot harder to change things.

first off a 3 gal monthly water change is wrong! you should be doing a weekly water change of about 5-7 gallons for your size tank. Second, tap water is bad. you should invest in a ro/di filter system. if you cant afford one now, use distilled water until you can pick a ro up. water you put in tank should be the same temp as current water inside tank.. you get a extra heater and temp gauge and make sure its both fairly similar. good luck with set up.. do alot of research and ask away on this site..everyone is helpful

Dont forget to match the salinity as well.

Do yourself a favor and read a lot and do a lot of research. Take your time with it because if you rush into things, it will burn you at the end. +1 on the RODI filter and keep the temperature between 78-80. Salinity should be between 1.023-1.025. Keep on asking questions on this forum because everyone is very helpful.
