Live sand

How can i tell when live sand is "DEAD" or no good for use of a salt water tank ?

Please can someone whos knowledgeable please help me figure this out Thank you

I have heard that if it stinks, like sulfur, it's no good, or it needs to be rinsed very well and dried very well

Live sand would be dead if it was taken out of a running tank and left to sit in a bucket for more than a day or so. It would have needed to have water circulation through it and a heater and not been packed like 5 or 10" thick in a bucket.
Then again, that doesnt mean that you would want to put it in your tank as it could be loaded with detritus, or taken from a tank where tap water might have been used, or loaded with phosphates from its prior life...

Best if you tell us what the circumstances are with the sand - since there can be so many different variables - and we'll let you know if we think it is ok to use
