That's up to you. Crushed coral is very coarse and traps food easily that can rot and cause problems. You need a great clean up crew (CUC). Sand can get too fine and remain suspended clouding the water. It can also be difficult to cycle completely and end up trapping hydrogen sulfide gas.
The trick is to get a nice middle grade that solves all the problems.
I started with crushed coral but switched to sand purely for looks and the trapped food problem. I love it.
