So I recently took on the task of taking care of my friends sisters tank. She has a 45 gallon tank pretty much fish only at this point. She has a 36" Coralife PC light and her filter is a Marineland Emperor 400.

She's had the system for about a year and half, but has had someone else taking care of it that whole time. She knows nothing about fish tanks, meaning she only feeds her fish, the rest has been done by someone else.

I tested her water the other day and her alkalinity was a bit high and her calcium was a bit low. Next time I go there I am going to test again and dose the tank accordingly. Her pH was about 8-8.2. Calcium about 320 and alkalinity 10 dKH. I will test magnesium as well next time I am there.

I am a bit concerned about the fish that she has in the tank... She has two black ocelarris (sp?) clownfish, one large yellow tang, and one medium-to large hippo tang. I told her definitely not to get anymore fish as the tangs both need more space already. All of the fish looked healthy, the clowns mostly stayed together and then the two tangs were swimming very energetically in and out of the rocks.

She also has one Yuma colony, they look pretty healthy although a little browned out and possibly a bit shrunken up. She mentioned that she wanted to get a few more corals. I told her if she really wanted to get corals she could start by looking at zooanthids, mushrooms or maybe hammer corals. Is this a bad idea? I also mentioned that if she wanted to do corals that it might require a bit more work on her part daily by possibly having to dose the tank.

My main issue lies in the fact that she does not have an RO filter. I don't have a car so there is no way that I can take pre-made saltwater to her apartment for water changes. Also I read that store bought pre-made saltwater needs to be aerated for a few hours before used. I don't think that money is too much of an issue for her, so although I'm sure it's expensive, does anyone know if you can actually buy pre-made saltwater?

+1 on the water. She should also look into upgrading the light fixture. How many bulbs does she have in that light? Also. how old are the bulbs? Im guessing, since shes runnin a fowlr, that they havent been changed out in a while. Tell her to go T5, they are alot cheaper to change out the bulbs.

If money is no object, then just have her buy Nutrisea (or some other brand) bottled seawater--Petco probably has it. If the tank remains FO then don't stress over the Alk and Ca levels--the fish don't care provided the salinity and pH and temp. are stable. Steer her away from any stony coral and have her stick to mushrooms, leathers and maybe zoanthids as they are pretty tolerant of pretty much anything.

The Nutrisea is what I was looking for. Does this need to be aerated before I put it in the tank? I also figure since I'm only going to be in every 2 weeks that she may eventually have to dose her tank if she gets more corals. I forgot to ask what she is feeding her tank, but I don't want to change it since the fish seem pretty healthy. Isn't it an issue that she has those two tangs in a 45 gallon tank? She probably won't want to, but I feel like she should be feeding her tank missis if she starts to get corals. Wouldn't they be more happy with this?

The nutrisea does not need aerating, but what is she going to use for top off? Yes the tangs sound too large for her system and will eventually need to go. The only reason to feed mysis is for the fish and as you said the fish seem healthy. If she sticks with the shrooms and softies I recommended above, she shouldn't need to dose if you keep up with the water changes--- they are not calcifying organisms.

It may be a little more inconvienent but Target brand galloned water is actually RO. If your only needing a few gallons a week it maybe be cheaper to buy it that way.

In my instance I do a 5 gallon WC every 2 weeks...it costs me about $10 a month for water....about $120 a year. Cheaper then a RO unit, no waste and no worrying about changing filters out. Just something to think about.
