Well the general rule of thumb is that you will lose 2 inches of water from a power failure or if you removed the pump. So if your tank is 48" x 18" x 2"(the 2" represents the depth of water loss.) the water loss would be 7.5 gallons into the sump. 2"s is playing it on the safe side for most tanks.

I'm curious how many gallons of space I need to leave in my sump in case my pumps shut off... I'm totally wishing I had room for a 40B instead of my 30B sump....

If you're using LocLine for your return, the point that the bottom of the LocLine reaches will most likely be the point at which your display tank will siphon down to. Therefore, if you're afraid too much water will drain from your display, you can raise the LocLine higher towards the water surface.

Do a power outage test. Set your LocLine to the ideal position you'd like it to be and turn off the pumps. If you see that the water is going to overflow the sump walls, turn your pumps back on (so it doesn't flood) and readjust your LocLine. When you raise it shut your power off again and keep testing it until your display doesn't drain/siphon more water than your sump can hold.

If you have multiple dead spots in your tank, behind rocks, next to overflows, then the LocLine Wye fitting (splitter) can help you direct the return flow to the areas that aren't getting flow from your MP40's.

You can also put a small hole at the water surface on your return, to stop the back siphone. That being said, If you have a 30b sump on a 75 you should be fine, as long as your baffels arent extremly high. I have a 20 lng as a sump and it worked out fine untill I hooked up my 30 gal display fuge. Now during a power outage, my water fills the sump to the very top!
