skimmer question

i just brought the reef octopus 1000sss & i wanna know how important is it to keep it at the required depth.
also do you think the skimmer is a bit overkill for a 54corner with a 10g sump?

no it should be good on that size, the air draw isnt crazy, the depth can and will play in how stable the skimmer runs, i do believe these run best in 6.5-8"
