That's what I was thinking too. It costs $20 at my LFS for only 4 1/2 gallons so I have to buy 2. My tank is 30g so I usually do water changes every other week (every week since the break out) of 5 gallons of the sea water.

I was wondering, should I purchase the unit from a local company in my area (link listed below) or just get one online from Dr. Foster's & Smith Aquatics. I've never had to do this so I'm unsure on what is best.

Thanks again.

air water and ice is a vendor here. they have a promo code you can use its 10% off for being a MR member plus free shipping code aswell. check out there page under market place for the details.

See, I knew I was ignorant at this. I only set up this tank in January and it's my first SW tank. I have a FW tank that has been thriving for 10 years.

Since my tank is only 30g, do you have any idea where can I get a small RO/DI system that won't break the bank. The one's that I have seen are for 50gpd and I really don't need that much since I only do 5g water changes a week or 10g every other week. I asked my LFS and they said that distilled water is just fine for my use, but then another person at the same store said that RO is better (but they don't sell it, whatever). That is why I'm so confused about the whole distilled vs. RO/DI situation.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it since I'm new to this hobby.

General temperature for a reef tank is 78-79 degrees. With an all in one tank im surprised you maintain a temp of 74 degrees

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab

I don't have any corals, just live rock. I was told by the LFS that since I don't have corals I should keep the temp between 72-78. This is why I'm confused, I get different answers from the LFS everytime I go there. They are a reputable place and have been there for years so I don't know why they give me a different answer when I ask.

They have a small unit called the mighty might right around $100. Well eventually you will get tired of always buying water for top offs and water changes.
So the upfront cost of the unit will be so worth it in the long run!

Hey I have the same system set up ( Red Sea 34d) . It's been running for 2 years now. I went through something similar when I first set it up. I can say with some experience that it is/was most likely the lights being on for 12 hours a day. I can tell you that is way too much especially for not having an coral. I have all types in my tank flourishing and I keep on the lights for just under 8 hours. You may want to do less time considering you don't have any corals set up. I say try running the lights 7 hours a day for a few days and see what happens. Good luck ! ~Andrew

I got the Mighty Might last night and can't wait for it to get here. The water pressure is great in my town so I don't have to worry about that. I have a 30g tank so I think the mighty might is good for my needs.

Thanks for the heads up on the LFS. The thing that kills me is everyone says something different when you go there. And... they're supposed to be Reef Specialists because that's all they sell.

I really appreciate everyone's help here and here are some pictures of the tank today. So far I was able to suck the algae off the rocks and scrub it. I also scraped the back wall and scooped it up so it won't pop. I'm guessing the RODI will make it stay clean.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!
