Hi guys, I will be adding a coral in a few weeks and would like some advice on what to get first. I have a 90 gallon RR tank, 30g sump , swc skimmer, ehiem 1260 rp and refugium with no chaeto yet. I also have around 63lbs of LR. My fish are a yellow tang, 3 scissor tail gobies, mated pair of percula clownfish, blue green chromis and a starry blenny. My inverts are a coral banded shrimp, long spine urchin, red legged hermits around 4, emerald crab and 1 turbo snail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bubble coral, mushrooms, zoa's&paly's, as long as your water parameters are good you can add what you'd like keep but I'd hold off on sps till you comfortable with keeping a reef tank. Also once you start adding corals keep your on on your alk, calcium, and mag! Good luck!

Softies. Definitely start with softies. They are much more hardy than LPS or SPS coral. Checkout Mushrooms, Zoo's and leather corals. The recommendations given by Jarrett aand typmyd are good. Be cautious of corals that are quick growers.

Read, read, read. Do not buy coral just based on our say so. Definitely do not buy coral just based on LFS say so either. Make sure you have a system can support the type of corals you are going to keep. Make sure you can support them also (water parameters, water flow, lighting etc.).

Like a couple others have asked.....what kind of lighting do you have? Have you tested your parameters? . If not like jarrett said bring one of us some water so we can test it for you and hook you up with some great starter corals. I have plenty of zoos i can give you. Let us know!

I just joined MR. I had no idea folks were giving things away. This is good know :)

Funny, I am in a generous mood myself now. I have a fair amount of pulsing Xenia that is growing quite rapidly in my tank. I wouldn't mind giving a bit of it away.

Is this typically how you swap coral on this site?

Happy Holiday to you too Andy

I'm guessing that is the NOVA extreme so you have 6x54w t5 HO.....so you would be able to handle most corals with that light....

Might want to make sure you get the algae issues under control before you start with coral. Alot easier to deal with it beforehand.

I had that light for a year. It was a great light for my 75 gallon. I grew soft coral LPS SPS and a bubble tip anemone. You should be able to grow whatever you are comfortable with.
I would suggest starting with some soft coral and making sure you are getting good results before moving on.

+1...test first though. Everything may look good but until you test you cant be sure. Once the parameters are in line your ready for coral. Dont waste time and $$ on coral that dont have a chance cause the parameters are off.
