I picked up my first piece of SPS and I first off, I have no clue what it is, so I posted a pic.

Second, how do you judge the healthiness of a piece of SPS?

That looks like a piece of orange montipora digitata. Good beginner SPS as they are more hardy than acropora. As far as them looking healthy......that's a big debate. IMO good night time polyp extension was a good sign because that means they are aggressively feeding. I have no idea if this is actually the case but corals that had better polyp extension at night, were my better looking coals during the day ;)
