Have any of you had luck with fresh cut frags from wild or mariculture colonies? I see quite a few vendors (on many different sites) selling really nice looking frags. It looks like they just chop up the colonies as they get them
Just curious if anyone has grown and kept peak color on frags like this. Post a pic! :)

jackson pretty much every corals i have was freshly chopped. going to someone house and asking them if i can have a piece and they cut them and stick em in a bag. i have MAYBE 10 pieces that were actually encrusted when i put them in.

Not what I meant duke. I'm not just talking about a fresh cut frag. I mean when a vendor gets in a bunch of wild or maricultured colonies and cuts them for frags immediately. Just seeing what kind of success guys are having these days.

oh ok. i got some of them as well. it does take a bit to color them up and they survive but stay brown for awhile. my SSC was cut like that it was wild and after moving it and putting some extra flow on it its finally starting to show signs of coloration. it has grown quite a bit though

I had a wild cut ssc in my last tank that wouldn't color up for the 6 months that I had it. The whole tank was colorful and growing like a weed but that stupid frag was dormant :dead1:

There is a big difference between fragging captive raised and wild sps.
Consider the stress of shipping wild or even maricultured corals. Sometimes in bags for several days to distributor then get rebagged and shipped to vendor. Fragging shortly after arrival would not be advised. Fragged corals should be quarantined and have encrusted base. Fresh cut have poor longevity under these circumstances.
Captive raised are already acclimated to synthetic seawater and artificial light. Fragging has a much higher success under these conditions.

I've had much better luck with sps that have been grown and fragged over few yrs in home aquarium ! I've tried several and some have done really well until a slight issue with alk temp etc and they just start to stn/rtn

This is why I'm a big fan of named liniaged corals
Why? my wild frags dont die and matter of fact look better then corals tank raised. all you need is a little patience and an eye for what a coral will be. There is no need to spend 100 to 200 a frag. First of all people who sell you frags for that much and trust me laugh at you every time you purchase there "LE" corals and i dont know about you but i enjoy the excitement when i see that brown coral starting to color up it a feeling of I AM THE MAN lol. I think i have bought 3 corals from vendors but they were at a frag swap and i waited to the end of the show to get them at a better price :) All JF

Duke I'm not talking about corals that been in hobby for 1-2 months I try to buy frags of sps frags that have been raised bin a tank at least a yr even better if it's more !! I also like buying random frag seeing how it does but ime wild caught sps r just not as hardy not saying can't be done there some amazing tanks I seen full of them I'm just not set up that way ATM ur system really needs to be rock solid!!!
And I usually get 4-5 frags when I order online for the $250 range so u could probably get 3 wild colonies for that but at least with frags I know they have been dipped and Qtd also have idea how they will look!
