Anyone have recommendations for a beginner sps? Only sps I have are two types of monti cap and I want more, but before I start getting nice ones, I want to try one proven to be an easy sps , like a birds nest, or red planet.

I find Birdsnests/digis/pocilipora to be very easy and fast growers, keeping them colored can be another story without stable parameters , they are much more tolerant of swings compared to acros.

The key with any Sps is stability. They consume more and can cause swings that will ultimately harm or kill them. If you realise this and take your time adding and test your water you can easily have success.

Montis, spongodes, & caps are all pretty easy Sps. Milis are easier than acros IMO.

Nutrient control is also another important thing.

From my experience, Acros tend to stn/rtn from swings before anything else.

UPDATE! well, bad news. i recieved a very small piece of a green acro( i believe it was acro) about 1/4" on a plug, it was fragged, and left in the original system for 2 weeks, doing fine and even had signs of growth, the white on the top. i also got a small piece of superman montipora, about 1/2" by 1/2" square on a plug, same deal as the acro frag, signs of growth after fragging, left in original system for 2 weeks. he gave me these pieces, kindve as a gift, but mostly as a thanks for the help i gave him. i slowly acclimated them to my tank, dripped for about 2 hours, nice slow drip, then i put them nice and high on my rocks. the superman was fine for a day, then the next morning i turned my lights on and it was almost completely bleached of its color! same with the acro frag, oly it started losing its color the first day, then on day two, completely white. i killed two very nice pieces of coral, and i feel terrible, since the supermans are one of my favorites. what could i be doing wrong? first thing i checked was calcium, and that is between 480-500ppm, alkilinity i cant test atm, temp 76, phosphates .25(high, but everything else is fine) nitrates are very low, about normal for my tank, sg .025, ph 8.2. i have a bunch of lps, some monti caps (two types) zoas/palies, xenia, shrooms, and a colony of star polyps. what is my problem? what can i do to fix this to where i can keep some sps in the future without murdering them?

I Want to start by saying Im fairly new to sps as well.

Alkalinity is of huge importance. Hard to say if you don't know what it is.

I don't know the kind of light you have but if they are bleaching. Perhaps you should place them mid then move them up high gradually. .

Acros from what I hear are the harder sps to keep. I thought you were going to start with an easier sps first then move to harder ones to keep like acros.

Good luck in the future.

like i said, they were just given to me, i didnt ask for them(dont take that as i dont appreciate them!!!) my lighting: i am running a single kessil blue and a dual t5 hood with one actinic bulb one 10000k daylight bulb. i have a 37 gal. cube tank that is 20 inches wide by 18 inches deep by 24 inches tall.(not a true "cube") and my rockwork only goes to about half way up to the top, so its not all that close to the top. i dont always turn on the 10000k bulb, only every other day.
