I left mine high in the tank, and did not move it. It is probably 12 inches from the nearest 400W 6500K Iwasaki bulb. I do not think the light was what damaged the coral. Montipora are very hearty, especially the captive propagated ones. I wouldn't worry about it. What they need most is to be left alone. If the coral is moved often, it will not stabilize. I would leave it be.

What kind of lighting do you have, and how far is it from the light?

How old is your tank? Seem to me it is still very new. It may not be stable enough for SPS yet. The corals seem to come from very low light enviroment (they look very dark). I would try to increase light gradually in this case. Good luck.
