Zooanthids vs SPS?

OK, I tried this topic on RC but only got one response. I have recently joined the zoo bandwagon and am interested in others' experience with side by side colonies of zooanthids and SPS. Do the zooanthids over run the SPS (most interested in acros) or do the SPS colonies tend to keep them from invading their turf. I have one spreading colony of zoos among my acros and they do not seem to do much harm other than preventing the base of the acro from advancing.

I have had a branching montipora come into contact with the zooanthids. It didn't seem to bother the monti at all, and the monti seemed to keep the zooanthids in check. I had a ricordea that bumped up against the monti too, but it did kill some tissue on the monti.

I have similiar experiences as earnie with montiporas, but I've found that Acros will get beat by zooanthids 9 out of 10 times. I've had stylos hold their own, Pocilloporas get beat, and pavonas at a stalemate. Personally, I don't like zooanthids or shrooms in my tank and wish I hadn't introduced them.

Ditto. Mushrooms and zoos are incredibly more toxic than most folks give them credit for. Of course, if they're not bothering a monti then they probably won't faze an acro.

If zoos are located on rocks well away from the sps I think they can work in nicely- in my experience the spread relatively slowly. I would still keep them off the main reef. Mushrooms, on the other hand are insidious, destructive and very hard to eradicate. Ricordea are the exception as they grow pretty slowly.

In my experience the brown zoos with the green centers (yeah real scientific huh?) burned every Monti and Acro they came into contact with. Zoos are pretty toxic critters.

Sorry, but those are the only Zooanthids I've had experience with. I'm also on the Mushroom Hater bandwagon. I had some red ones that loved to let loose, float around the tank and land on my favorite SPS colonies.

My new tank will definately be shroom free. :wink:

I love shrooms and zoos, but I keep them in different tanks than my SPS.

Some ricordea grow quite fast, though.
