I have had the problem with my sps polyps not extending well or at all in the day. I have lived with this since people say its not that big of a deal.

I have fragged several pieces and sold them to a local store. I have also given pieces to a friend. The pieces given to these people have the polyps extend right away, even in the day. So whats the deal? They are the same corals that did not extend in my tank.

I tested everything today again and all seems OK.

Ph 8.2-8.3
cal 375
Dkh 10-11
ORP 418 Really dont trust taht reading anyway
nitrates, phosphates, ammonia, nitrites 0
salinity 1.025

I use a calcium reactor, 4 inch dsb with southdown, tanks is now 120 with 2 400 hqi 10k.

I was thinking fish could be the problem

1 purple tang
2 yellow tangs
1 blue tang
1 cheveron tang
1 scribble angel (could be the problem as he occasionally nips but nothing major.
2 bangai cardinals
1 lawnmower blenny
margarita snails, astrea snails, left hand hermits

I also have a grow tank with no fish and the coral frags do the same. It had a 250 and just upgraded to a 400 hqi 20k.

I am assuming its something with the water. I use ro/di with a digital tds and change the di once it reads 1. I use kent salt and do a water change of 40 gallons about every two months.

So whats the deal???? Thsi drives me crazy as I have some cool sps that are supposed to be fuzzy but arn't.

Any help or suggestion appreciated

Try giving the coral more flow. I just upgraded my tank with a couple of sea-swirls on a closed loop and I have never seen polyp extension like this on my corals before. IME if a fish is nipping on a coral throughout the day it will not expand at all. Slowly it will die if it can't feed.

Good luck.
