Here is an old photo of an unknown coral; I have no knowledgement about these animals but I hope that somebody could tell what it is.

I have no reef now and some years ago I had one reef tank with live corals collected in our area. I will show these soon.

It does resemble an oxy, but with out a macro shot, ID'ing is pointless.

While I agree that it is most likely an "Oxy", I have been surprised when doing skeletal exams that "it" will turn out to be something entirely different than what "it" seemed to be. And to help myself as well as others get a good starting point ( a genus ), I put this together in the hopes that it would do so.

Stony Coral Genus Photo Guide

And as an example of what I mentioned, The following link shows a coral's identification (and the details needed) to what I had at first thought was an Echinophyllia

That's why most of us said "it mostly looks like" ;) Photo Id'ing of corals is mearly shooting into the dark at best.

You've got a very nice site going there, I'll be sending many people your way now :D

Guess I should have been more specific to the original poster that I was trying to provide a tool to get started and what it takes to attempt an ID, while its possible to get within a genus through photos of most (not all) corals, to get species specific, it would take a skeletal exam and provided the last link to show an example if that person was interested in delving into it.

Both links were created by myself and have alot of other pages as well as a huge "links" library as well, of course the obligatory "my tank"...lol

I also put alot of effort into a photographic fish disease identification and treatment page as well as a fairly decent hitch hikers page as well. Not much else to do when retired and living on a tropical island, well, when I am not face down over a reef that is....lol

Yeah, its rough, but someone has to do it...lol, and thanks for the referrals, not that its a commercial site, but its nice to know ones efforts are of use to someone.
