Got a nice piece of encrusting Montipora with purple polyps about 4 weeks ago, and it was doing well in my tank.

Decided to get a few frags from Raskal311 last night, and as I was unbagging the frags, I found that there are many tiny black bugs on my wild Montipora. At first glance, I thought they were just black dusts.

So what should I do? They are less than 1/3 of a millimeter in size, and very difficult to photograph, and appears to be smaller than the infamous red bugs. They are all on my Monti, and I just want them to spread to my frags that I just acquired.

Am I overconcerned? :?

I don't think FW will get these black bugger to let go of the Monti. unless I go over the entire coral with wire brush... 8O

I am keeping my fingers crossed until some definite answer is out....

jsteel, if you do find the FW works, let me know.

That's interesting, ck. I picked up a Tyree M. aquituberculata frag yesterday. I did notice a couple of black spots on it after I put it through my regular dip. I assumed the spots were just debris, as it easily blew off the frag afterwards.

Without a picture it's impossible to tell. They could be a harmless species of Amphipod or they could be a parasitic species of Copepod. Get out your magnifying glass and see how many eyes they have. Two eyes, good; one eye, bad.

Here is what it looks like:

Seriously, I will need to get a microscope for this. For some of the black dots, I can tell they are piggy backing end-to-end, as if they are doing one of those reproductive activity... 8O  Just a guess.

If anyone has a microscope with digital camera attachment in LA/OC area, you are more than well come to come to my place to take pics of these little models.

I doubt the mods will let you post bug porn in the general forums. Maybe in the sump. 8O

If yah could get them up here to the SF area, I could put them under the scope and snap some shots. FWIW< I got great shots simply using my macro setting on my camera.
